UNFPA Delegation Visits Modern Centric Holdings: A Collaborative Step Towards Sustainable Development

By Modern Centric Holdings

22 May 2024

Rosebank, Johannesburg – On May 21, 2024, Modern Centric Holdings welcomed a delegation of twelve representatives from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The visit marked a significant moment for the Johannesburg-based company, known for its innovative approaches and impactful initiatives. The UNFPA delegates, enthusiastic about the exchange, delved into discussions centered around the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and the crucial agenda of Leaving No One Behind.

Modern Centric Holdings, under the leadership of its founder and Managing Director Zakhele Mgobhozi, presented a comprehensive overview of their multifaceted operations. The discussion highlighted the company’s dedication to driving social change through its various subsidiaries, which include Modern Community Foundation, Modern Centric Academy, Modern Centric Events, Zakhele Reusable Sanitary Pads, Shumela Hayani, and Modern Centric Agricultural Solutions.

The company's objective, which is to promote sustainable development through innovation and strategic alliances (unothering the othered), was expounded upon by Zakhele Mgobhozi. He underlined how Modern Centric's objectives are in line with the SDGs, especially the ones that deal with global collaborations, health, education, sanitation, responsible consumption, and climate action. The Zakhele Reusable Sanitary Pads initiative, for instance, aligns with several SDGs, notably SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

To achieve its goal of helping over a million girls by 2030, Zakhele Reusable Sanitary Pads can make a big difference by working with big organizations like UNFPA. UNFPA's proficiency in reproductive health services and health education may offer vital assistance, guaranteeing that the provision of reusable pads is accompanied by thorough health education.

Moreover, integrating menstrual health management into school curriculums can reduce absenteeism due to menstruation, promoting continuous education for girls. With UNFPA’s backing, Modern Centric can develop and distribute educational materials on menstrual health, crucial for both students and teachers.

The visit also highlighted the importance of infrastructure support in the realm of clean water and sanitation. UNFPA’s involvement can facilitate the construction of necessary sanitation facilities, ensuring girls have access to clean water and private spaces for managing menstruation. Community programs focusing on the importance of sanitation and hygiene will further support the sustainable use of reusable pads.

Promoting reusable pads as a way to reduce environmental effect helps achieve climate action objectives. Advocating for policy changes can impact the use of sustainable menstruation products by highlighting their significance in efforts for coping with climate change.

The UNFPA delegates were especially curious about how Modern Centric's projects address issues of gender-based violence (GBV) and teenage pregnancy, two of their focal areas. The company's all-encompassing strategy and dedication to fostering an environment that is welcoming and encouraging for underserved populations impressed the organization.

Modern Centric Holdings' devoted employee Robert Swanepoel expressed his excitement for the visit. "The visit made me realize that we have come so far as an organization, and it was a dream come true," he stated. This feeling was shared by the entire organization as the visit demonstrated the real results of their work and strengthened their commitment to carry on with their vital mission.

Modern Centric had the chance to discuss their recent #IAMME event, which took place on April 15 at the Marriott Hotel, during the meeting. People with disabilities and LGBTQIAP+ people were the two marginalized communities that were the focus of this collective meeting. The UNFPA delegates gave the event high marks for being inclusive and for helping to advance social fairness.

In addition to being educational, Modern Centric Holdings' conversation with the UNFPA delegation was motivating. Both sides saw the value of working together to address global issues and advance the SDGs. The delegation departed with a profound sense of gratitude for Modern Centric's kindness, welcome, and corporate culture.
