Celebrating Pride Month: South Africa and the World Come Together to Promote Equality and Inclusion

By Modern Community Foundation

01 June 2024

As June arrives, individuals and communities around the world are gearing up to celebrate Pride Month, a time dedicated to honouring the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQIAP+ community. This annual celebration serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for equality, diversity, and inclusivity.

In South Africa, a country that has made significant strides in LGBTQIAP+ rights, Pride Month holds special significance this year, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the legalisation of same-sex marriage. The efforts of organisations like Modern Centric Holdings and Modern Community Foundation are at the forefront of this year's celebrations, promoting inclusivity and making strides towards the Leave No One Behind (LNOB) agenda, through events such as I AM ME.

In 1996, South Africa became the first country in the world to constitutionally protect LGBTQIAP+ rights. A decade later, in 2006, same-sex marriage was legalised, further cementing the country's commitment to equality. In 2013, the South African government established a national task team to address LGBTQIAP+ issues, demonstrating a continued dedication to safeguarding the rights and well-being of the community.

Events such as I AM ME are important, which was hosted at the Marriot hotel, on the 15th of April 2024, because discrimination in the workplace remains a significant issue though, with one in five LGBTQIAP+ individuals experiencing discrimination, according to the South African Human Rights Commission. Additionally, violence and discrimination continue to affect the community, with 41% of LGBTQIAP+ individuals reporting such experiences, as highlighted by Love Not Hate. Verbal harassment and bullying are also prevalent, affecting 70% of LGBTQIAP+ individuals, according to the South African LGBTI Manifesto.

Beyond South Africa, Pride Month is celebrated worldwide, with cities around the globe hosting their own parades, festivals, and events. These celebrations serve as a reminder of the progress made in LGBTQIAP+ rights and the work that still needs to be done. They provide an opportunity for individuals to come together, show their support, and amplify the voices of the LGBTQIAP+ community.

Didintle Hotane, head of marketing at Modern Centric Holdings, stands as a shining example of the company's commitment to creating an inclusive working environment. Reflecting on her experience, she shares, "At Modern Centric Holdings, I feel valued for who I am. The company has fostered a culture of acceptance and support, allowing me to bring my authentic self to work every day. It is empowering to be part of an organisation that actively champions diversity and inclusion." Masego Mofokeng, an employee at Modern Centric Holdings, echoes Didintle's sentiments, stating, "Modern Centric Holdings has cultivated a workplace where everyone's perspectives are valued and respected.

The company's commitment to inclusivity has created a supportive environment where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive and contribute their best." Revel Harris, the Managing Director of Modern Community Foundation, emphasizes the importance of promoting LGBTQIAP+ rights and inclusion. Revel states, that “true progress can only be achieved when everyone, including LGBTQIAP+ individuals, are given equal opportunities and protections”. Through our initiatives, we strive to create a society that embraces and celebrates diversity, fostering a sense of belonging for all." Zakhele Mgobhozi, the renowned founder of Modern Centric Holdings, shares his vision for the company and its impact on the LGBTQIAP+ community. "We believe that diversity is a strength, and it is our responsibility to create an environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and empowered.

The efforts of Modern Centric Holdings and Modern Community Foundation go beyond Pride Month celebrations. Throughout the year, these organisations continue to advocate for LGBTQIAP+ rights, raise awareness, and support initiatives that promote equality and inclusivity. Their commitment to the Leave No One Behind (LNOB) agenda ensures that the LGBTQIAP+ community's specific needs are addressed, both in South Africa and on a global scale.

As Pride Month unfolds, the world comes together to celebrate the progress made in LGBTQIAP+ rights while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead. These celebrations serve as a powerful reminder that unity, acceptance, and respect are essential for building a more inclusive society.
