Empowering the Marginalised: Modern Centric Academy's Journey to Inclusive Excellence

Modern Community Foundation

Rosebank- In the bustling heart of Johannesburg, a quiet revolution in education is taking place, spearheaded by Modern Centric Holdings (MCH). As the host company for the transformative initiative B4I (Bridging for Inclusion), MCH is creating ripples of change that extend far beyond the walls of its training centers. By providing essential resources such as training facilities, devices, internet access, and refreshments, MCH is not just supporting education but redefining it.

Modern Centric Academy, a subsidiary under MCH, is dedicated to offering accredited training programs that equip students with the skills needed for successful careers. This commitment to quality education is evident in their partnerships with prestigious institutions like CISCO and accreditation from the  Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). However, the academy's mission goes beyond academic excellence. It aims to foster holistic development, nurturing future leaders who are not only skilled but also socially conscious and driven by purpose.

A critical aspect of Modern Centric Academy's mission is its alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By prioritising the Leave No One Behind (LNOB) agenda, the academy ensures that marginalised groups, including Persons with Dis-Abilities (PWD), are given equal opportunities to thrive. This approach is a testament to the academy's belief in "unothering the othered" and providing a platform where every individual, regardless of their background, can shine.

The academy's dedication to inclusivity is reflected in its diverse student body, which includes learners with dis-Abilities enrolled in research-based Business Administration courses. These students are not only gaining theoretical knowledge but also skills that make them employable in today's competitive job market.

Vuyo Phewa, an IT intern from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), fluently captures the essence of this initiative: "It is so heartwarming to see these learners become more knowledgeable and semi-skilled. It makes me happy to be under Modern Centric Academy and be put  be in a position to help upskill people from an underprivileged background with the necessary technical skills that are crucial to have in the workplace."

Testimonials from learners further underscore the impact of Modern Centric Academy. Nomvula Vilakazi, one of the learners, expresses her gratitude , "This academy is providing me with a strong foundation in various modules, helping me develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills," says Nomvula. Another learner, Kgaugelo Matotoka, highlights the academy's role in enhancing business administration skills and conflict resolution . "Modern Centric Academy helped me in understanding business admin skills; it has helped me in conflict resolutions ," he shares.

Reflecting on her experience as a Plant Production L2 Facilitator and teacher at Modern Centric Academy, Zenaida Mngambi shares, "The experience has been both challenging and rewarding. My wish is to complete theoretical learning of each cluster and thereafter go to the farm, ensuring a balanced approach to learning." Her words highlight the academy's dedication to providing a well-rounded education that combines theory and practical application, ensuring that students are well-prepared for real-world challenges.

Hlengiwe Vilakazi, the General Manager of MCH, emotionally asks, "How long do you want to be called the marginalised?" This powerful question underscores the academy's mission to dismantle barriers and empower individuals to rise above societal labels. By providing quality education and fostering an inclusive environment, Modern Centric Academy is actively contributing to the realisation of the LNOB agenda and the broader goals of the UN's SDGs.

A cornerstone of Modern Centric Academy's success is its ability to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The academy understands that true learning happens when students feel valued and supported. This is why every effort is made to ensure that students have access to the resources they need to succeed.

In a society where education is often seen as a privilege, Modern Centric Academy is breaking down barriers and making quality education accessible to all. This commitment to inclusivity and empowerment is what sets the academy apart and makes it a true catalyst for change. As the academy continues to grow and evolve, it remains steadfast in its mission to empower individuals and communities, paving the way for a brighter, more equitable future.
